WORLD BOOK DAY IN THE UK AND IRELAND

TODAY IS WORLD BOOK DAY!!!!
In the UK and Ireland
The rest of the world will have to wait until the 23rd of April!

The aim of having a World Book Day is simply

"...to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own".

Read more about it here . There are lots of tokens and freebies and everything else a little kiddie would enjoy, e.g. books going for £1.00.... a site where kiddies may upload their stories! Wow!

So get them young, is wot I say! Start the little dears reading and writing stories and using their libraries and being generally creative and excited about the written word whether online, e-print, whatever!

Books ROCK!

So grab a kid and make them read!

:-)

Now, why wouldn't "world" book day be on the same day everywhere, I wonder?

Growing up I read every horse story I could, Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden, etc. LOVED reading. But then, I was a pretty shy child, so I could escape into so many worlds with my books.

Awwww Kim!

I loved Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys! Loved them!!!

And so glad you escaped into the world of books - much better place to be in, I truly believe that. We should all do so and then the world will be a better place!

I think the UK celebrates it now to avoid it clashing on the 23rd April with a big flag waver of a day here - St. George's Day.

No kids around now but it's a great idea.

My boys both read: Harry Potter did it for one of them, and Terry Pratchett for the other.

(For me it was Enid Blyton.)

Hi fairyhedgehog

Ooooh I love that it's the "Big Three" (well in my eyes anyway!): Pratchett, Rowling, Blyton!

Yay!

I should read more. My parents were always busy when I was little, so I wasn't given a lot of opportunities to read different books. It's wonderful to have the World Book Day to encourage children to develop an interest in reading :). That's pawsome!

Hi LoveMeow!

Awwww I agree! totally pawsome!

It's very difficult when parents are so busy - hopefully this one day would encourage more reading even if its only for a day!

My oldest son told it was my fault he doesn't read. I ruined reading for him. Puzzled I asked him what he meant. After all I was so diligent, always reading to them. He then told me he always enjoyed the way I read and did all the voices and when he read the stories they were never quite as exciting. Go figure! That’s one for the child psychologists!!!

When I was young, we had the RIF (Reading Is Fun) mobile visit our school once or twice a year. Every child got to go inside this van filled with books and pick one to take home, absolutely free. That was always a great day for me, and I still remember many of the books I got from the RIF mobile. In fact one of them, torn and tattered and yellowed, is still on my bookshelf.

Kea makes an excellent point. Doesn't sound very worldly, does it?

My daughter just got eight Rainbow Fairies books and my son received a Percy Jackson Olympian Files book through a Scholastic order I placed in his classroom. So I feel like I celebrated a little today.

And I subbed, doing a lot of reading to the students (Post coming soon). Thanks for making me feel like this all meant a little extra today, Old Kitty!

I was a voracious reader as a child, sneaking books into bed when only the hallway light was on. My father warned that I'd ruin my sight, but I have the best vision of the four of us. Come to think of it, that wasn't very supportive of my reading, was it?

Hi Theresa Milstein!!

Yay!!! For celebrating with your children. And you've proven that reading is good for your eyesight, so there!

:-)

I think the UK is different from the rest of the world cos there's a St George's day on the 23 April, I think!

Anyway!! Ooh I do look forward to you blog posts - love reading them!!

Are you suggesting that World Book day and St George's day are incompatible?! Perhaps people in UK and Ireland could be trained to wave a flag with one hand and read a book in the other?

Wonderful event! Both my children are avid readers, and I hope my grandson will love books. I've bought him so many already ad he does love to sit and look at pictures and "read" along.
