Scarlet eavesdropping

Overheard in Boots the Chemist shop between two members of staff:

Woman: So what do you plan to do?

Man: I don’t know but I was thinking of sending him to boxing classes.

Woman: Does he like boxing?

Man: I don’t know but I think this will toughen him up, he’s too soft.

Woman: How's he too soft?

Man: He’s just too soft – I think he needs toughening up. He tried tae-kwan-do but he got bored with it.

Woman: How old is he again?

Man: He’ll be seven next month.

***********************************************

At that point I found what I was looking for - a bottle of Rimmel 60 second quick dry scarlet red nail polish. I just didn't have the excuse to linger any longer!

But I do wonder about this particular child and hope that one day he discovers his own true voice.

Charlie says: I know you're behind me so I'm saying nowt!

Have a whacky Wednesday everyone!

Love your blog

I got the exact same shade of Rimmel nail varnish from the poundshop a couple of weeks agox

That's just sad! There is no such thing as a 7 year old who is too soft! I hope something happens to lighten Dad up before he scars that child for life!

Oh, that poor child!
Seriously, that poor poor thing...

There's nothing worse than a soft six-year-old. I mean, is he still playing with stuffed animals? If he doesn't knock someone out by the time he's seven, the other children will tease him.

Geez. I didn't know you were so rough on your children in England.

You're a better person than me. I would've had to make a face at the guy before buying my Rimmel.

(My word verification is "strog", which is pretty close to "strong".

That poor child! We hope he comes back as a Cat in his next life and gains some independance.

I remember an eavesdropping from several years ago, on a city bus. Reading your mini-story here, I think I shall look for mine tomorrow. That will be Wednesday for me. You're already Wednesday. Have a great one says me and Jen!!

Aww Charlie you are looking good dude!
I worry about this next generation... I'm sure they will find their footing, but we certainly aren't helping them with our current parenting mode.

I love it when I'm your first commenter. (I know the whole time zone thingy.)

Kind of sad that the mum wanted to toughen up a 7 year old. It's kind of like around Christmas time; the shops are busy, some adults are humming Christmas songs, clerks are stocking shelves and helping people and then you hear it...Some woman yelling at her kid (in the toy department)...It happens every year and makes me sad every time.

Kid should be loved and treated with kindess...I'm not saying discipline is bad, but publicly being ugly to your or about your kid is pretty low in my eyes.

Yikes! Poor child. Maybe I give my children too much room for decision? Maybe there's no such thing?

I've let them stay in their karate class until they lost interest. I let them go to whatever clubs they want. Sure I encourage them and point out how each thing would benefit them.

I'm so proud to see my teen girl love her violin. ;) One of these days she might say, I'm not interested any more. I hope not, seeing how much joy she gets from it, but we shall see...

Blimey, poor kid.

I was in Boots a few weeks back and overheard one staff member say to another, "Oh, I've left him dead on the couch." I assume she was speaking figuratively ...

I do hate it when people want to toughen boys up.

Poor kid. I, too, hope he finds his own "voice." But sometimes that can take decades of life experience.

Hmm, perhaps you could do Charlie's nails too. ;-)

Run Charlie, or you're gonna end up with red nails! Poor mini-human...nuff said!

Poor kid! At least Charlie won't be taking boxing classes, but maybe modeling classes? Oh no, he's already got the modeling down pat. :)

Charlie - you did the right thing -pretend you are asleep and you get away without passing a comment.

Why would anyone want to toughen up a seven year old? Great post!

Unbelievable. I thought you were joking until I read the comments.

Again I must say it! Un-be-lievable!

I don't even want to "go there" in my mind about the future of that young person! At least (hopefully) he'll be able to defend himself if anyone actually calls him "soft" (or worse).

Huh? At 7??

All I remember at 7 was buying one donut coated with heavenly dust (castor sugar la!) for 15 cents!

Psstt .. Jenn, how about sending Charlie to Jujitsu classes? hehehe Toughen him a little!

Please tell Charlie to stay off Martha's tables!

Thanks for visiting me this morning and verifying my story!

Poor kid...parents just overdo the classes stuff now..classes for everything instead of spending time with them. Charlie...you look cute as always! Like the new look on the blog!

Oh dear. Those sound like parents who are worried because their son is getting badly bullied... I can understand the dad's reaction, though I'm not sure whether it's really going to help....

Oh, that poor little boy whose Mom thinks he is "too soft." Perhaps it is more that she is "too hard."?

I love fast drying nail polish!

Oh dear Lord. Sometime I really worry about the children of the world.

I once taught a child whose father told him he was going to lock hom up in a cell. To make him learn he can't fool around in class, the father said. Scary stuff.

Marg said...

You bad eavedropper, but that is so sad about the child. Imagine that at 7 years, the child is being accused of being soft. What does he want the child to do, go out and get into many fights, etc.
Now Charlie has eyes in the back of his head. He knows you are there. LOL
Have a super day or evening what ever time it is there.

Wow, that poor kid. I hope his mom discovers that he just wants to be a kid & have fun. But maybe if he does poorly at boxing she'll kinda get a clue.
