Ailurophiles United

Ailurophile – a noun describing a person who likes cats.

For some reason The Oxford Dictionary of English (2006 ed) doesn’t have this word.

Instead it only lists Ailurophobia – a fear of cats.

I think that’s bizarre. Why have the fear of cats but not the love of cats??

Charlie says: I’ve invented a new word “wozatatweetybirdyouttadawindow”: verb - to be mesmerised by bird-like or actual bird movement outside a window.

The blog that Charlie is hogging is the fab Jacqueline's Cat House! Charlie's in love with Sukkie, Calle and Halle! Heheh!

Bowdlerise. That was the crossword answer – thank you my lovely intelligent bloggie friends for helping me with this word!!! (Naughty Reenie!! :-))

Have a terrific Tuesday everyone!

I like all of those words, espcially Ailurophile...and of course Charlies word! The crew over at Jacquelines is way cool...Charlie has some very classy friends there!

How could anyone fear cats? How could anyone not love them?

Charlie looks so cute looking out the window!

Well, that is odd that fear of cats makes it but love of cats doesn't. And in the OED - that is just really surprising. I wonder if it is in that giant room sized edition? The one with every word ever in it (or something like that). Oh, and Gus and Stella love Charlie's word, and so do Virgil and Kirzon (Lola and Barney don't watch the birds as much). They think he is smart to come up with it!!

I've never heard of the word bowdlerise - sorry I couldn't be any help on that one! Charlie does look mesmerized - those must be some very pretty cats. :)

Didn't know this word existed. So we are all ailurophiles! LOL!

We bet Charlie pronounces his new word as "eheheheheheh"! At least that's how we say it in American Cat.

Mommy has always been suspicious of the Oxford dictionary, now we know why.

Haha, guilty. But hey, I'm as curious as a cat. I'm a true ailurophile, you see?

I have learnt a word and used it too. How cool is that!

Have a good day, Charlie & you :)

Charlie is so clever...perhaps he could apply for an editorial position with the Oxford Dictionary! :-)

As your post title was Ailurophiles United, and now that I know what an Ailurophile is, I want to declare myself one. Charlie might want to mosey on over to My Kitchen Table (www.barbarascully.blogspot.com) where he can meet my Tiger - a permanent fixture on my kitchen table.

I wonder what the term would be for: "slave to cats"?

Thanks for the new word, Kitty!

I can see why Charlie is in love with Sukkie. She's lovely!

We're not surprised Charlie doesn't move from the screen when Jacqueline's beauties are on there - they are all very pretty.

I'd like that word even better if I could pronounce it. :) So far I have come up with: 'ail-lure-o-file' which sounds like I lure files over to my desk, which I actually do a lot, come to think about it.

I do love discovering new 'old' words though - thank you! And I love Charlie's new word - must teach it to my cats. They do it often, accompanied by little chirruping meows which I am sure translate as 'bird! Bird! Actual feathers and things! Right there! BIRD!'

Oxford needs to get up to speed and get that cat love word in there. I hope more people love cats. Looking at Charlie's picture of him gazing out the window--what's not to love?

Lola Sharp said...

Um, what's the word for being allergic to cats, even though I think they're beautiful?

Charlie looks mesmerized, indeed.
