A Nagging Thought

I’ve just watched a film called The Family Stone (2005).

It’s a very mawkish, extremely sentimental, not too challenging film that was ok for a Friday night after work when it’s raining outside and all I wanted to do was vegetate.

But one thing bothered me about this film.

Two brothers fall in love with two sisters.

My tired brain kept wondering throughout the one hour and 45 minutes whether this was legally possible or not.

Not that it mattered but this nagging questioning sort of ruined the film for me – not because of the film itself but because my brain wasn’t vegetating at all but instead it was thinking – on a Friday night when I was tired and it was raining outside.

Charlie says: I think therefore I am.

Have a stupendous weekend everyone!

It's National Feral Cat Day in the US!! Please follow this link for more info about caring for these gorgeous stray and feral kitties - of which there are many!!!

What movie was it?

Charlie, you sure are. We'd spot your spot anywhere!!

Ha! Where I live there are a lot of Mormons, and it might be possible (albeit NOT legal) for one brother to marry two sisters...

I, personally, advocate polyandry.

Thanks for posting a link for National Feral Cat day! I hadn't heard of that. Although we have a neat program helping feral cats (feeding/neutering, so no increase in population) on the base where I work... it makes me feel better about the cats I see whenever I'm walking around at night there).

I don't see any legal issues with brothers marrying sisters, but it does seem a little convenient!

I haven't see that movie as yet, but I have heard of relationships and marriages this this. As long as the brothers and sisters are from separate families it's legal. It must be strange having all the same in-laws!

Charlie is so smart! :)

I like the feral plan of catch, neuter and release, so that more kittens don't become feral.

Hi Old Kitty,
I hear you! It was a grey and rainy day in Montreal :( not to mention cold and windy. Yuk! I saw the demise of at least a dozen umbrellas: some were just left on the streets, others ended up in the garbage can. Sorry, I digressed.
I saw that movie too, and I'm glad I didn't waste my money at the movie theatre. I think the brothers swapping girlfriends is kind of juvenile. I rather watch a Woody Allen movie even if he always plays the neurotic, hypochondriac, hapless-at-love guy. I like him. He's witty. ;)
Have a wonderful weekend!
P.S. I asked one of my fellow bloggers to check out your blog.

Two brothers dating two sisters would be legal, but not recommended. In my opinion.

Watch a better film to get that one out of your head.

I never saw Charlie's black spot so well.

Happy weekend!

I hate it when mindless entertainment makes me think too much!...Hope your weekend improves, Jenn!...Take care, sweet friends, big kisses to Charlie...J, Calle, Halle, Sukki

I don't think there are any legal issues for brothers to marry sisters as long as they aren't their own sisters...

You have a good weekend too!

I really loved that film. A bit over-the-top in the sentimental department but watchable. To answer your nagging doubt, it is legally permissable for two brothers to fall in love with two sisters. My father-in-law was one of two brothers who married two sisters!

I *think* it is not illegal if the two brothers are falling in love with two sisters- which are not *their* sisters...

... but who knows really- it's my hayfevery brain after all.

Glad it's weekend!

Two brothers fall in love with two sisters not of their family, right? You're not talking an incestuous relationship, I presume. Sounds okay to me, then. :-)

Humans think too much. Seriously. Over-thinking never has resolved my emotional baggage or any other issue in my life, it's only made a muddle. Less thought, more healthy action, that's my motto. Or *should* be my motto! LOL!

It's legal as long as they didn't fall in love with their OWN sisters, Old Kitty! I watched the last bit of it too and yes, mawkish but addictive, like marshmallow!

Irrelevant thought - that's a jolly nice random round patch of black fur on Charlie's back.

I believe it's legal for two brothers to fall in love with two sisters, provided they're not their own sisters. (But you shouldn't take my word for it.)

I hadn't known about National Feral Cat Day--thanks for the link! :)

How annoying when mindless entertainment doesn't stay mindless!

I love the picture of Charlie. Such an unusual spot on his back.

I don't know the answer to that question. I guess it would be all right as long as the sisters and brothers are from separate families.
Charlie, you sure are looking terrific. Too bad you can't go outside with all the rain. Take care and have a super day.

Our mama says she hates when her brain gets overactive, too!!!!!!

What was the movie?...especially if it was a BBC/British movie.....mama is a huge BBC fan and really prefers them most times to the American films/tv series.

Right now she's watching A Touch of Frost series again...think this will be her 2nd or 3rd time through the series. She could make a long list of the BBC tv series that she loves and watches over and over.

We sometimes wonder if mama was born in the wrong country, but then realize she was born here so she could be our mama!!!!!

Charlie, you are such a handsome dude. We love you both....xxxxxxxx

My God, OLD BUT ACTUALLY YOUNG KITTY. It's been too long since we met up in physicality. Or even had any contact at all!

It's been quite a year. Second baby last month and I launched a new website on gaming back in April which is more successful than old writing haunt Hammerport (which still exists).

I got published online very recently too. I'm getting more written this year than ever before -- but little fiction right now unfortunately.

Sorry I've been out of touch for such a long time. We should try to meet up again soon.

I haven't seen the film, but i always tend to believe if a film can make me think then it was worth seeing, but I'm sorry your brain didn't veg like you wanted.

DJ Kirkby said...

It isn't legal even for step siblings.

Talli Roland said...

Hunh? In the same family? I'm confused... but it doesn't take much these days! I fell asleep on the sofa while watching Come Dine with Me.

lupie said...

Different families - the two brothers and two sisters, right? Then, it should be legal?

But, will get complicated if their children falls in love ...

Hmm ... now I am all confused...

Yes, Charlie, you have confused me further!

What a weird movie! I have no idea if it's possible or legal. I guess anything is possible.

Sometimes I'm not in the mood to think and I accidentally watch a thought-provoking movie.

Feral cats break my heart. I thought my cat was feral at 4 months old, and I didn't know if I could keep him. But he warmed up to me and he's tame now.

I have a friend whose parents are part of a two brothers marrying two sisters scenario. It happens!

Ca88andra said...

I guess as long as the two brothers have different parents to the two sisters, its fine! Interesting thought though.

Thanks for spreading the word about NFCD, hon!

Hmmm... legal or not, it could prove awkward if one of the unions doesn't pan out. Sorry you had veggus interuptus!

As long as they weren't their own sisters the brothers fell in love with. (In which case even one of the pairs falling in love would be illegal) I thnk it used to happen quite often in ye olden days! (I mean, 2 brothers falling in love with 2 sisters). Oh, wait do you mean one brother fell in love with two sisters? Oh dear, that's got ME all confused now! :)

My Grandmother's sister married my Grandfather's brother. That was in Warwickshire in the 1920s

I actually know sisters married to brothers - I guess it is legal here! Looking good Charlie. Have restful Sunday!

Private said...

Haha. I saw that film because I love Rachel McAdams, but it wasn't that good. But yes, I believe it's perfectly legal. And I'm surprised at Charlie - does he not speak latin? Cogito Ergo Sum, Charlie.

penandpaints said...

Aw, don't worry, I think it's all perfectly legal!

It's surprising how many feral cats there are. In the flats where my in-laws live, there are a pair of black and white cats that had taken to sleeping in the bushes outside. When the residents realised, they provided blankets for the cats to sleep on and they take turns feeding them. The cats never venture indoors, but are very happy to accept the food offers! I'm glad there are people willing to look after animals like these.

I just read you post from the other day about nearly getting run over! You poor sausage. I always have my head in the clouds, so that now when I'm out near dangerous vehicles I have to say 'concentrate, concentrate' to myself to stop my mind wandering :/

I saw that movie. It's legal for 2 brothers to marry 2 sisters. I know of several instances where it happened outside of Jane Austen novels.

I love cats but wifey is allergic to them. And I stay away from stories with complicated multiple pople love themes. They usually turn out to be weird. Maybe I'm just old fasioned.

Thanks for tell me about my post. I removed it for now until I get the photos right.

We thinks it was OK. Our Double Great-Uncle was our Grandma's brother and his wife was our Grandpa's sister.

Haven't seen this movie but it sounds OK for a rainy night when you just want to unwind.

Charlie didn't watch it?

Jackee said...

I'm pretty sure it's legal in the US at least... I know too many sibs who have married another set of sibs for it not to be. :o)

Love the pose, Charlie!

I know what you mean about "The Family Stone" ... when I saw it at the theater I couldn't wait for it to be over especially when the 2 sisters conveniently fell in love with 2 brothers....please! It was awfully melodramatic but I agree it was a movie that was a good non-thinking movie...perfect for quiet evening at home!
