A Way to a man's heart is through his stomach

Bloggie friends, I collect recipes in the same way I collect.. er… viruses! LOL!

None are safe from my beady amateur cook’s eyes whether the recipes are in magazines, food packets/tins, books and oh, the internet.

So imagine my delight at discovering this gem of a recipe from The First Book of Boys’ Cooking by Beim, Jerrold (1957):

LOL!

I am indebted to this site: Awful Library Books for bringing this yummy treat to my attention! And this is just a taster! Excuse the pun. The link will not only bigify the recipe but have more extras from the book!

The site is set up by a couple of lovely librarians from Michigan and the books are actual stock that they may weed out from their collection.

Now do you see why I love libraries and some librarians and their able assistants so much?!?!

Charlie says: Raw Carrots! Yuck!

Have a healthy Monday everyone!

Not even I need a recipe for raw carrot sticks!

Easy recipe using few ingredients & not too much equipment! :)

I like raw carrot sticks but sometimes they need something else like Ranch dressing or French Onion Dip.

Can't stand cooked carrots at all--the look Charlie gives you about w/ raw carrots is how I feel about cooked carrots.

HA! My Dad once tried to figure out how long you have to cook spagetti until it turns red. I'm with you on the carrot sticks Charlie!

This is awesome.

I'm shocked that someone would need a recipe for raw carrots. If you need one, perhaps you shouldn't really be allowed to use a knife or a parer. You'll just get hurt.

Not you, of course, but someone who would consider that a recipe.

Now how to prepare that celery?

Wow, this was a real recipe? I guess anything involving more than one ingrediant is too much for boys :)

Great point about librarians though! I may have to keep track of that site.

Thank you so much for posting this! I have been trying to make this dish for years and have always been completely mystified as to how to do it!

Charlie already sees better in the dark than most people. If he started eating his raw carrots he'd be a beacon that glows in the dark. :)

Lovely post, and I suspect that it’s no coincidence that carrots is an anagram of cat-rors.
Have a nice day.

That's excellent. Also, that's tea sorted out for my family tonight!

We didn't realise there was such a
clear recipe for carrot sticks - now we can have them every day. Sigh - if only we could hold a knife!

Why am I surprised that boys would be that clueless? I really shouldn't be. Especially since the book was published in 1957.

Give me a little dip or hummus to go with mine, please. :-)

By an amazing coincidence, I've just made this recipe as part of my lunch!

(Mark you, I did the simpler version without the glass of water and ice box. I know my limitations.)

We agree that raw carrot sticks don't sound very appetizing! We're pretty sure your Mom won't make you have any, Charlie.

I could handle a recipe for raw carrots. That might be something I could do. That is so exciting. Have a good week with lots of carrots.

I'm with Charlie. Carrots are the Invention of Satan.

LOL! What kind of recipe is that! It's so complicated. That's the problem with recipes they always use ingredient(s) that I don't have in my fridge and require equipment I don't own!

That is hilarious! Thanks for the link. I love having one more reason to hug a librarian--creating more space for new books and posting funny old books! :)

Have a great day!
