The Day for Living Dangerously

Bloggie friends I am fearless!

Or foolhardy! LOL!

I ate a tin of sweetcorn with a best before end date of…… July 2010!!!!

Along with a jar of baby asparagus with a best before end date of.. . August 2010!!!

All topped with cheese that had gone yellowy crusty at the edges.

But I was hungry bloggie friends and this was my first proper meal since the influenza knocked me back for six!

Not to worry – said sweetcorn was poured on a pizza base I made from scratch because apart from the above my larder was down to a bag of plain flour, a sachet of yeast and a bottle of cooking oil.

No more tins of soup for me. I've ran out! LOL!

Today I shall drag my carcass to the shops to stock up. Even poor Charlie is down to his last sachet of Beef in Gravy.

Charlie says: I shall be ringing the RSPCA anon. Or maybe just go next door. First I must roll around on this drainage cover here.

Thank you kind and adorable bloggie friends for all your wishes for me to be all well!! It worked!! Thank you!! Please have this resilient little sunflower!!

Have a spiffing weekend everyone!

Don't forget 19 Sept deadline for story submissions to 50Stories for Pakistan, proceeds to go to the Red Cross, thank you.

How uncanny that both of us have been "under the weather" at the same time! Are we a lot alike or what?!! I have had a terrible head cold for 2 days and I too had to pull myself together and grab a few things from the grocery store tonight and I was not a pretty sight to behold, believe me!
I am glad you enjoyed the post about Savannah and Bengal cats and I agree that they are expensive but if I had the money I'd buy a Bengal cat furr sure!

I'm glad to hear you were able to eat today, Jen! I'm sure those "best before" dates are only suggestions. I've been known to dig a can out of my pantry that had expired over a year before and it was still good...or at least I lived to talk about it! I hope you continue to get better.

Charlie has such cute paws! That drain cover must have felt nice and warm from the sun.

Have a happy weekend!

I've read that the end dates on canned foods is really basically for the supermarkets. That it stays good for many many MANY months after that. When you think about how people used to can food (with no refrigeration) and it would last a year, then I guess it is safe to assume (is it??) that canned food will stay good for some time too.

Have a great weekend.

I think Charlie pick you up some food when he goes begging next door.

If I lived near you, I would do some food shopping for you and maybe cook something.

If you want to feel better about your expiration date, remember my post about the eight-year-old butter.

That sunflower is a symbol of hope. They are one of my favorite flowers.

Have a healthier and good weekend.

Hope you're feeling better, Old kitty. I've been ko'd by a cold all week too, and been hitting the tinned soup hard.

Speaking of expired food, I once poured lumpy milk on my cereal, but it was my last lot of yummy home-made muesli, so I tipped the milk off, rinsed my bowl of muesli with water, and 'borrowed' some of my housemate's non-lumpy milk to eat it with.. Totally worth it!

Well, I'm glad you're feeling better. Sounds like a very unhealthy meal but you eat what you can when your getting better.

Nothing like livin' life on the edge! You are a wild wild woman to eat EXPIRED fudz! Wow.

Better watch out, Charlie may start to eye you speculatively, food-wise...

good to hear you're recovering well, kit... and that you're gonna get some grub! :O lol

charlie can manage on a bird or two, methinks ;)

I wish I were there to fix you a proper meal. Sounds like you were desperate, tired and hungry, and grabbed whatever. Those expiration dates don't sound too bad tho. Not like it was milk. Canned foods can go past their dates w/o concern. As long as the cans aren't bulging!!

Hope you are feeling better. Charlie looks a bit under the weather as well. Love the sunflower. Is that real?

Nothing wrong with a few out of date canned products; just avoid the ones with mould! Glad you are feeling better x

Charlie doesn't seem to be in danger of perishing from hunger. NOT to mean he's fat, because he's not, he just looks healthy and happy. :-)

As for his human...We're all glad you're feeling better! Very brave, to eat the corn and asparagus after their best-before date. I might have done the same myself, were I hungry enough, but usually I get paranoid about those best-before dates. I *have* been known to cut the mould off cheese and eat the remaining good bits, though.

Have a good weekend and please don't overdo things; your body still is recovering!

You're so sweet, you make everything sound fun even when it really isn't.

I hope the food did you good not ill, and that Charlie isn't pestering you too much. He is gorgeous and he knows it.

Hugs.

Jenn - glad to hear you are feeling better - canned food dates don't matter unless the can is damaged - I ate some well out of date tinned chicken the other day and apart from growing a few feathers I seem ok!! Thank goodness you had the out of date food though or else Charlie might have had to catch the odd mouse to go on top of your pizza ha.ha!!

We are so glad you are doing better. This flu is currently ripping through our office. Good reason to work from home!
We hope you are up to full speed soon.
Scritches to Charlie, I'm sure he took good care of you while you were sick.

Sounds like an interesting dinner! I'd be more concerned if the expiration date was July 2007. I think you're pretty safe w/ just a couple of months.

Hi Charlie, hope you get a huge assortment of food soon! Sounds like you need some TUNA! :)

Glad to hear that you are feeling better. Love how you improvised with your food. Good job. That sunflower sure is a strong one. Great picture. Charlie, glad to see you are still rolling around. Take care and have a great day.

Spectacular sunflower!

Glad you are feeling better. I think tins keep pretty much forever, but my Loved One is so dogmatic about best before dates - we are always having arguments over whether to throw stuff out or not! I'll usually take a risk with things, unless it smells bad or is covered in mould. Whereas, if it is even a minute after the date, he'll be slinging it in the bin!

So glad you are feeling better! Now go get Charlie some food!!!

I hope you have a great shopping journey but don't forget to check the expiration dates! Roll Charlie roll!!!

Thank you so very much for the beautiful flower. I just love it.

Glad you are feeling better.

I also hope Charlie got that itch on his back.

I heard from a friend that those dates are just made-up! He said they just pick a date and put it on the labels. I don't know...but I think if you eat the tinned food within a few months of the date you aren't in too...let me emphasis TOO much danger!

Glad that you are feeling better-for me it is saltines and ginger ale when the bug hits.

Daring you going past the expiration date.

Old Kitty I was not super drawn to him at the adoption site. Now I cannot believe how it was not love at first site. He is my baby boy-honestly I cradle him like a baby-I burb him on my shoulder-that is his favorite-touring the cupboards of the house on my shoulder like a baby-I love to just nuzzle into his fur.

The only time I have seen him hiss is at the adoption center and once after a 7 hour vet visit. He is a sweet boy.

I am glad you are back eating, those dates are made up anyway, you'll survive.
Beautiful sunflower, what a tonic.
Hope you get a good shop in.
We've had a house of flu here as well, nasty.
Thanks for the story prompt, I just sent one off, last minute me as usual.

When I was growing up I'm sure we didn't have so many dates on things, and my dad used to scrape cheese and take the mould off the top of the jam and eat what was underneath!! I do hope that everything you ate doesn't disagree with you and enhances your recovery, I think you should be safe with vegetables!! I too wish I was closer to be able to look after you, hope you feel lots stronger very soon. xxxx

ROFL!! I live dangerously, too! Many a can I've dug out of the back of the pantry over a year past its prime... if no swelling and no rust, I give it the stiff'n'nibble tests, if all seems OK, I eat it. Still here to tell the tale.

Glad to hear you're feeling better and glad Charlie won't have to call the RSPCA!

I'm glad you're feeling better! Charlie is just spoiled, don't listen to him. He'd never dare call the authorities on you - he'd rahter eat corn than leave you, I'm sure!
