Straw clutching

Bloggie friends – the wonderful Simon of Spellmaking has advertised a couple of flash fiction competitions (click here for further details) that I thought I’d have a go at entering.

One of the competitions is to write a story as sublime as Ernest Hemingway’s “For sale: baby shoes, never worn”.

So far my muse is eluding me.

Nevermind. I console myself that even if I may never be able to create a 6 worded story as superb as Mr H’s at least we have two things in common.

He liked cats and he liked his adult beverages! LOL!

Charlie says: I do not see the point of this blog piece. I am going next door.

Have a terrific Tuesday everyone!

Another blogger friend just posted about the Hemingway festival today, and she posted about his six-toed cats last week.

What's next door, Charlie?

Oh, Papa...

Wow, I couldn't take that kind of pressure. I'm not the competitive type, but best of luck to you!!

So Hemingway was the inventor of flash fiction before it was even invented! I bet you can do it, I bet you can write one that good! I believe in you. And seeing that photo of old Ernest makes me want to go write for 6 hours. I didn't realise Charlie had a perfect black circle on his back. He just keeps getting cuter and cuter.

I love the black and white photo - and as always, Charlie's droll comment.

A big hug from me and Jen!!

Hemmingway was a genius. Oh yeah, and he wrote pretty good, too.

That is a great photo of him. I loved his writing and of course that he adored cats. Deb =^..^=x5

Charlie's just jealous because another cat is looking cool on this blog!

I don't think I could manage a six word story. I am Irish, I can't say anything in six words! That's why I write. :)

Do you ever check out the Hemingway cat site? There's a live web cam, but it's not always so easy to see any of the polydactyl cats!

Good luck with the competitions; I hope your Muse doesn't elude you for long.

Kitty kisses to Charlie. :-)

Maybe some strong RUMBLEPURRs will help your muse come back?

Tsk tsk, Charlie. So hard on her! Six-word stories aren't easy.

I'm reading a book about literary greats. Now I know I'll never be one because they were all NUTS. I mean, alcohol and drugs, phobias, sex issues, and overall madness. How did they understand so much about the human condition and make such a mess of their own lives? Plus, most of them were horrid to their literary contemporaries.

Anyway, good luck! Find your inner-moxie.

We haven't known you very long, but we have faith in your ability to write something amazing!

Can't wait to see what you write in both of those contests. That should be fun for you. Now, Charlie, you need to stay home and pester Mom to get that brain of hers into gear so she can win that writing course. Have a great day and take care.

Disapproving Charlie always makes me laugh! :)

And for all his faults, those are two things to love about Hemingway!

For your six word piece you won't need to worry about adjectives then!!
Charlie is looking very handsome today - Hannah and Lucy send you lots of purrs.

I've never tried flash fiction, but it sounds like it would a fun (though tough!) challenge. Good luck!

Good morning...this is my first visit to your blog. Bossy Betty sent me over. She was right I did thoroughly enjoy the visit and will be back.

I agree - that was Hemingway's best work - at least that's what he thought:)
Here's my two cents; inspired by Picnic at Hanging Rock.
Five vanished girls, never seen again.

Hi,

Oh, thanks for that - I didn't know I was wonderful! I do definitely think you should have a go!

The Arvon six-word contest is great fun. I've submitted six entries myself.

Has Charlie gone next door because he's jealous?

Charlie--I understand. You have much more important things to think about! Love the way this picture brings out the spot on your back!

I am not a fan of Mr. Hemingway's writing, but I like a lot of his side stuff. A friend visited Cuba about a year ago, and spoke of the Hemingway cats (a feral tribe that people just feed--he first brought them there)

NPR did a feature on these 6 word stories and there were some FABULOUS ones, so I have no doubt you can do it.

Aw Charlie, don't go!
Hehe, thanks for the link, looks very interesting

Been to his Key West home and loved all the cats stillroaming about. You can do what he did and better - just write!

I visited one of Hemingway's homes tat was located in Key West, Florida. It is now a museum and it is still full of cats that are taken care of by his estate. They could be descendants of this cat in the photo you posted :)
