A Leaping Anecdote

Bloggie friends! 2012 is a Leap year so here is my leap year anecdote.

A few leap years back when I was so young and ever so foolish, I won a leap year bet at work by marching to my male manager and asking him to marry me.

Luckily said male manager turned me down but not after he had an apoplectic fit of laughter bringing on his indigestion and causing him to take the afternoon off to see his doctor - but let’s not dwell on that.

Now as I look up Leap Year on Wiki I discover these amazing facts (as yet unverified and unsubstantiated so I deny all liability for false information) that if the man turned down such a proposal made by a woman during a leap year, they were liable to:

1) Pay her £1.
2) Buy her 12 pairs of gloves.
3) Or fabrics for a skirt.

Anyway! I still think I got the best out of this as the bet I won was for a pint and pub dinner!

Charlie says: I see the New Year in by taking it easy.

Happy leaping 2012 everyone!

We think the pint and a dinner was the best option after all you only wear one pair of gloves at a time unless your hands get as cold as Mums!!
Hoping Charlie had a proposal free New Year - us lady cats need eligible bachelors to escort us on evenings out!

Love that leap year story. Glad the jerk got sick over laughing so much. I didn't know it was a leap year. I think I will refrain from asking anyone to marry me. LOL. Take care.

Funny story, Kitty. I can see you doing just that! Dinner and a drink sounded like the best deal anyway.

Brian's Home Blog said...

Well I think you got the best deal too and Charlie has the best idea! Happy New Year and I hope 2012 brings you all the furry best!

Very wise. I agree with Charlie.

Happy New Year! I proposed to hubby 20 years ago on Leap Day, and thankfully he said he'd be delighted to marry me.

(This was not for a bet!)

What a bold and saucy girl you were! :D *snort*

No, that's hilarious. And I didn't know this is a leap year! How fun! I think the Mayans are also saying this is the end. Beautiful friend.

Ah, well. Life is short! Here's to a fantastic 2012~

Yeah, Charlie has the right idea. We had my wife's family over, and all of us were asleep before ten o'clock New Years Eve. Now that's the way to bring in the new year. Catch up on sleep.

ROFL! I love you. You are so awesome. Just hate that we're an ocean apart so I can't visit you.

I watched that movie with Amy Adams (I can't remember the title) that was about proposals and leap day. I think it's such a fun idea! And I hope this leap year brings you lots of good things!

A pie and a pint sounds like a good reward! Well done you for taking it on!

Lydia Kang said...

You did get the good deal! Happy New Year to you and Charlie!

Fuzzy Tales said...

A pint and a pub dinner definitely made you a winner in that deal. :-)

Can't imagine asking any of my co-workers to marry me, even as a gag. I'd be the one gagging, just with the thought. Ha.

Happy new year, Jennifer, to both you and Charlie.

I hope for a kind and merciful 2012 for us all.

Charlie definitely has the right idea. As to your bet . . . you did get the best end of the deal. Love those free pub nights out.

Damn! I'm already married. I could use 12 pairs of gloves.

I almost forgot it's a leap year.

That was a great thing to win, better than the three alternatives.

Happy New Year!

That's hilarious! You're gutsy! :)

Charlie looks like he's got the right idea :)

Ooh didn't know 2012 was a leap year. Interesting. Loved your leap year story, very funny. A pint and a pub dinner is definitely better that fabric for a skirt!! Yuck, hate sewing! Nice to meet a fellow cat lover :) Happy New Leap Year to you.

I'm sure the manager was just overcome with the realisation of his unworthiness of you and he attempted to overcome it by laughing and running home.

Melinda Szymanik said...

Ooo, gumption, I love that. Gumption is most deserving of twelve pairs of gloves. But I guess the glove money was spent at the doctors for indigestion instead :)

Happy New Year young Kitty

I forgot about that tradition. I wonder if I can make it to Ireland by the 29th.

Charlie definitely has the right idea by seeing the year in "easy!"

I would say that FOR SURE you got the better end of the deal! who would want fabric for a SKIRT????

LynNerdKelley said...

Hahaha! You sure got the better deal by winning that bet. There's a movie called Leap Year (I think) and it's about a woman who's been waiting for her boyfriend to propose but she's going to propose to him for leap year, according to an old custom. It's a fun romantic comedy!

Claudia Zurc said...

Happy New Year to you and Charlie!
Love your leaping anecdote ;)
WOW! I applaud your courage...you proposed even before you had the pint ;) LOL!

Ellen Whyte said...

Did Charlie get a proposal? Will he turn her down? Or start a romance?

Congrats on your pint win. Any leap year bets/marriage proposals in the work this time?

The movie Leap Year was the first time I'd heard of women asking men to marry them as a leap year thing.

Happy New Year, Old Kitty and Charlie!

Old Kitty, you are a hoot! Love your tales.

And looks like Charlie has a great idea...taking a snooze. I think it's going around, though, as "The Boys" are camped out on me and near me.

I once knew a girl who proposed to a random stranger in a grocery store on a bet, for much less than your bet, too!!

I once sang the Sleeping Beauty song from the Disney version at the top of my lungs in a Wal-Mart. Dares are awesome!

Tracy said...

Hah, didn't realize it was a Leap Year. I had a friend in high school who was born on Leap Day and it just befuddled me to think of having a b'day every four years.

Charlie's attitude has to be something we can all strive for...relaxed and take it as it comes...

mshatch said...

so glad your blog was only temporarily disappeared. Sounds like the sort of thing Rincewind would do by accident. Glad Charlie knows the proper way to bring the new year in :)
