Herman - my new best friend

Bloggie friends!!

Meet Herman.

Herman is a friendship cake mix. And yes, a friend gave me this mixture. Hoorah! It’s great to know I have friends. LOL!

Apparently I’m to look after the mixture for ten days. I’ll need to stir, talk (ahem), mix and add stuff to it.

On the tenth day I divide the mixture into five. I keep one part and then give the rest to four others.

Of course I hope I find four other friends to whom I can offload Hermans 1, 2, 3 & 4 to! Oh dear!

I then add lots more ingredients to my own Herman mixture and bake.

Come back in a few days to see how my own fiendish Herman fares!

Charlie says: I sit on the router and scramble the network.

See y'all soon!

Oh that stuff is EVIL! Just wait, all your friends will start avoiding you and Herman's sourdough spawn.
I know, I had a similar experience with a certain Stanley!

Katnip Lounge said...

Oh! I for got to mention, before you bake Herman, dust your baking pan with a cinnamon/sugar mix instead of flour. It's DELISH!

Deborah said...

Hey Charlie, Herman the friendship cake, I never heard of it! What stuff do you have to add? Oh, If I lived near you, I could take one part of it on the tenth day! LOL Interesting concept. I wonder if it will be good~
Well, have fun!

Heck, Herman takes me back to the 70's when I, too, had a 'friend'...now I can't think of the last time I made 'real' pancakes, hahameow!

Oh wow does this bring back memories! One summer someone gave me friendship cake mix and when I tried to give it away, my neighbors said "No thanks" so I made it all into cake. Over and Over and Over again. I had cakes everywhere and kept several in the freezer. Our 3 youngest boys were still in school and their friends came over constantly for cake. They called it "the summer of endless cake" and it remains one of the most magical memories they have. Their friends are all grown and married now but will still talk about "endless cake."

10 days? Is it something yogurt-based? A liquid mix for 10 days?! You'll really have to tell us what's in it, that it wouldn't spoil over such a long time!

Charlie, are you the reason your human hasn't been blogging in a week? ;-)

This Herman sounds interesting. I'm a bit concerned that this mixture will be good after so many days. Hmm. The proof will be in the tasting. Can't wait to see the cake.

Never heard of a Herman cake! Hope it tastes good after all this effort!

I love stuff like that. I don't bake, so I pray no one ever gives me anything like that, or I'll break the chain. But I love it. My mom and her friends did that w/some bread starter. I think they called it "friendship bread." Best w/it! :o) <3

Hooray for new friendships! I was thinking, "oh, poor Charlie--he's been replaced!" But when I saw who Herman was, I was relieved! ;)

I had a Herman but he died while I was away on hols. I am sure you only divide the misture into 4 though, not five! I have a delish recipe for apple cake that you need a bit of Herman to make.

Al said...

Is it a kind of sourdough thing?

Theresa Milstein said...

Good luck with Herman. Someone gave me a starter once - it turned into a delicious cake bread.

Goodness Herman sounds like a chain letter cake LOL! Sounds fun.
Has Charlie been sitting on our router? It's always scrambling ;O)

Anonymous said...

Maybe the router is warm and toasty. Kinda like a heating pad on a cold morning or a cool evening. Charlie says, "Ahhhhh, that's the ticket."

Rene said...

That sounds like your version of an Amish friendship cake. :-)

Summer Ross said...

Sounds interesting. I didn't know you could do this with cake mix. Have a great day!

We'd like to know what you're adding too :-)

Oh, I remember Herman, he was married to Lily Munster, just being silly. I do remember my Mom's friend, saying she was bringing Herman by. Then she walked in with a bag of dough, huh?! Have fun with Herman and Charlie~

What an interesting and fun idea! I hope Charlie's fur isn't one of te ingredients!

Cynthia Chapman Willis said...

Friendship cake--what a great idea. I hope Herman turns out to be delicious. Maybe Charlie will even move of the router to try a bit of Herman cake?

Kitty, get off that wiring! CatFi is not better than WiFi.

I've never heard of a friendship cake. It sounds weird, but anything involving friends and cake has to be good.

klahanie said...

Oh my, 'Herman' has his own cake?
I recall Herman and his Hermit friends doing a few songs in the sixties. Now, he's got a cake named after him.
And Charlie, I have an internet service 'unprovider' :)
Take care,

Charlie's thinking the staff has gone crazy.

Michael Offutt, Phantom Reader said...

Hmmm. I don't bake but this sounds kinda like raising a lifeform as opposed to cooking. Does it make it taste any better? How could you bring yourself to eat something that has listened to you for so many days? I dunno...never talk to your food is my motto.

Margo Benson said...

Can't wait for the mix and plot to thicken!.....

wildcatwoods said...

Do you have to eat....um, this cake? Sounds kinda scary.

Cat Wisdom 101 said...

Oh yumm! I love Herman cake.

And new follower here (don't know why I wasn't already since I see you everywhere . . .) but Leah at That's Write sent me. :)

LynNerd said...

Haha, Charlie sitting on the router! Years ago I was given some dough to make friendship bread. It was so delicious and I ate tons and tons of it and kept it going for about six months. I ran out of friends to give it to and so I had about six different batches going at times. I was skinny back then, so eating that stuff all day long didn't add any weight on my skinny bones, but if I started baking that bread again these days, I'd become a blimp in no time because I have no self-control when it comes to that scrumptious friendship bread.

I think it's hilarious that you named it Herman and have to talk to it! LOL!

AMOffenwanger said...

AAAaaaah, not Herman!! Duck, run! You'll be forcing him on all your friends, he'll be taking over your kitchen, he'll be the monster in the back of your fridge!
But, maybe, you can devise a cat cake recipe that uses Herman. I'm sure Charlie would appreciate it.

Claudia Zurc said...

It's been a LONG time since I first heard of the friendship cake mix. I think I did it once, hmmm or maybe it was my sister, LOL!
I know you have more than four friends to share this cake with. Enjoy!!!

RaShelle Workman said...

I can't wait to find out how you think Herman tastes. LOL Charlie, you beautiful cat, you're adorable.

Jenn said...

Wow, what an...interesting idea.

KarenG, that sounds like an awesome summer! Who wouldn't remember a summer of cake?

All this talk about cake makes me want to bake. But not for 10 days. ;)

Have fun!

I am traveling this week and have spotty internet service, so I am sorry if I am slow in responding at times...hope to catch up soon!

This sounds a little like a sourdough bread starter. I've heard of people passing that on for many years from the original batch. I hope your cake will taste good!

PK HREZO said...

lol... Charlie looks ticked. He must not like you messing around with other friends.
I've heard of these friendship cakes before and it sounds delish!

I saw your Herman handiwork. Looked good to me! I once got a starter that was so delicious, but the piece I saved didn't make it in the long run.
